Cloud storage is convenient because files follow you across devices and can be shared in seconds. That convenience usually requires trusting the provider not only to secure its infrastructure but also to handle technical access to your data responsibly.
Proton Drive changes that trust model by encrypting files on the client before upload. The provider stores the data but does not possess the key required to read the protected content.
Quick verdict: Proton Drive is a strong home for private documents, photos and secure file sharing. It is not automatically a full Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 replacement: teams that depend on deep office collaboration, integrations or complex file workflows should test it before moving everything.

What Proton Drive encrypts
Proton Drive applies end-to-end encryption to file contents. It also encrypts filenames, folder names and thumbnail previews. Files are encrypted on the device before upload, and content is cryptographically signed so clients can detect tampering.
That is a meaningful difference from storage that only encrypts server disks. Disk encryption protects against stolen hardware and some infrastructure breaches, but a provider-controlled service can normally decrypt files during ordinary operation. End-to-end encryption aims to prevent that provider access.
Some operational metadata remains available. Proton's Drive privacy policy identifies fields such as creation and modification times, permissions and the account that uploaded an item. Shared links also generate operational records such as creation and last-access time. Privacy claims should always be understood at field level rather than reduced to “everything is invisible.”
Storage, sync and backup are different
These terms are often mixed together:
- Storage keeps files on remote infrastructure.
- Sync mirrors changes between devices and the cloud.
- Backup preserves recoverable copies when the working version is deleted, corrupted or encrypted by ransomware.
A synchronized deletion can spread everywhere. Version history and trash help, but important data should still follow a separate backup strategy such as 3-2-1: three copies, on two different media, with one copy off-site.
Proton Drive can be one component of that strategy. It should not be the only copy of irreplaceable work or family photos.
What you can do with Drive
Current Proton Drive capabilities include:
- web access and apps for Windows, macOS, Android and iOS/iPadOS;
- file and folder synchronization;
- mobile photo backup;
- encrypted links and email invitations;
- password-protected and expiring shares on supported plans;
- version history and recovery controls;
- Proton Docs and expanding online productivity features.
Proton says file upload size is limited by available storage rather than an arbitrary per-file ceiling. Real-world upload performance still depends on connection speed, encryption overhead, device resources and platform behaviour.
Secure sharing
Drive can share files through an email invitation or link. End-to-end encryption protects the stored file and Proton supports adding a password and expiry date to links.
Apply the same discipline as any secure sharing system:
- Share with named recipients where possible.
- Set the minimum necessary permissions.
- Add a password for sensitive public links.
- Send that password through a different channel.
- Use an expiry date.
- Revoke access when the work is complete.
Encryption cannot stop an authorized recipient from downloading, copying or photographing a file. It controls access to the delivery system, not human behaviour after access.
Free and paid storage
Proton's setup guide currently lists these allowances:

Plan prices, regional taxes and temporary discounts change. Compare the checkout and renewal totals rather than only the promoted monthly equivalent.
Drive Plus makes sense when encrypted storage is the primary need. Unlimited is better value only when premium Mail, VPN or Pass would otherwise be separate paid subscriptions. Duo and Family provide more storage but should also be judged on account administration and each person's workflow.

Proton Drive versus Google Drive or OneDrive
Proton's clearest advantage is reducing provider access to file contents and names. Google Drive and OneDrive have much broader ecosystems, mature real-time office collaboration and extensive third-party integrations.

Security and functionality are not opposites, but encryption changes what servers can do. Search, previews, automated classification and integrations are harder when the server cannot read content. Choose according to the data and workflow rather than forcing every file into one platform.
A safe migration plan
Inventory before copying
Identify personal, shared, archived and application-managed files. Remove duplicates and files that should not be retained. Confirm ownership of shared folders; a shortcut to someone else's data may not migrate as an independent copy.
Test each file type
Upload a representative sample of large media, office documents, archives, photos and nested folders. Test previews, downloads, filenames with unusual characters and sync across every required operating system.
Copy before deleting
Keep the source intact until file counts and total sizes are reconciled. Open random samples from old and new locations. For critical archives, compare checksums where practical.
Rebuild sharing deliberately
Old sharing permissions do not automatically become good new permissions. Reinvite current collaborators and expire legacy links. Document the new authoritative location so people do not edit stale copies.
Maintain an independent backup
Before removing the old cloud account, produce an offline or separately hosted backup. Test recovery rather than assuming a completed upload means a recoverable archive.
Recovery and account risk
End-to-end encryption limits provider recovery. Protect the Proton Account with a strong password, MFA and current recovery methods. Store recovery codes outside Drive—putting the only key to Drive inside Drive creates a circular failure.
Also protect every endpoint. If malware or another person can access an unlocked computer while Drive is mounted, encryption at the cloud provider does not prevent them from reading available files.
Final verdict
Proton Drive makes a strong case for private cloud storage because it encrypts both content and meaningful metadata such as names before upload. It is particularly attractive for sensitive documents, private archives and sharing where provider access is an unnecessary risk.
