Email is both a communication tool and a recovery key for the rest of your digital life. It contains contracts, receipts, travel details, private conversations and links that can reset other accounts. A calendar can be just as revealing: it maps your location, relationships, routines and future plans.
Proton Mail and Proton Calendar are designed to reduce how much of that information the service provider can read.
Quick verdict: Proton Mail is a compelling private inbox, especially with a custom domain. Proton Calendar covers everyday personal scheduling well, but people who rely on advanced Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 collaboration should test the workflow before migrating completely.

How Proton Mail protects messages
Proton uses two important forms of content protection.
Mail between Proton users is end-to-end encrypted automatically. The message is encrypted for the recipient and Proton does not hold the private key needed to read its contents.
Stored mail receives zero-access encryption. Incoming mail from a conventional provider cannot arrive end-to-end encrypted unless the sender uses a compatible encryption method. Proton encrypts it after receipt so the stored content and attachments are not readable by Proton later.
This is different from standard TLS. Gmail and most modern providers use TLS to protect mail while it travels between servers, but standard service operation can still involve provider-controlled keys. Gmail offers stronger client-side encryption only on certain Workspace editions and configurations.
Proton users can send a password-protected encrypted message to an external recipient. That is useful for occasional sensitive communication, although the password must be shared through a separate secure channel.
Encryption does not hide everything. Email delivery requires some addressing and timing information, and Proton may possess limited account metadata. It also cannot protect a message after a recipient copies it, screenshots it or forwards it elsewhere.
What the inbox is like
Proton Mail provides web, mobile and desktop apps with familiar folders, labels, filters and search. Easy Switch can import mail, contacts and calendars from services such as Gmail or Outlook.
Paid plans add the features that matter most for professional use:
- custom email domains;
- multiple addresses;
- catch-all addresses and auto-replies;
- unlimited folders, labels and filters;
- Proton Mail Bridge for IMAP/SMTP desktop clients;
- additional aliases and priority support.
Bridge performs encryption and decryption locally so a compatible desktop client can work with Proton Mail. It is a paid feature and adds another local component to maintain. People happy with Proton's own apps do not need it.
Why a custom domain is worth considering
An address such as [email protected] separates your identity from the mailbox provider. If you later leave Proton, you can move the domain's mail records to another service without changing the address everywhere.
The domain itself becomes critical infrastructure. Protect the registrar with a unique password and strong MFA, renew it automatically and keep billing and recovery details current. Proton secures the mailbox; it cannot rescue an expired or hijacked domain.
Proton Calendar privacy
Calendar encrypts critical event information including titles, descriptions, locations and attendee identifiers. Proton's privacy policy explains that it still needs some less-sensitive fields—such as start and end time, time zone, recurrence rules and event status—to deliver notifications and operate the service.
Private calendar search illustrates the consequence of encryption: events are downloaded and searched locally because Proton's server cannot simply index their protected contents.
All users can create events, recurring events, invite participants, import and export calendars and use mobile apps. Proton's current plan guide lists three personal calendars on Free and up to 25 on paid Mail plans. Paid plans also enable calendar sharing and appointment scheduling features.

A safe migration sequence
1. Secure the new account
Use a unique generated password, enable two-factor authentication or a passkey and save recovery codes separately. Make sure you understand Proton's recovery options before moving irreplaceable data.
2. Import rather than immediately forward everything
Use Easy Switch to bring over a copy of existing mail, contacts and calendars. Verify folder structure, representative attachments, contacts and recurring events.
Temporary forwarding is useful during transition, but a permanent chain from the old provider preserves dependence on that account and may leak metadata. Treat forwarding as a bridge, not the finished architecture.
3. Add the custom domain
Follow Proton's DNS instructions for MX, SPF, DKIM and DMARC. Verify sending and receiving before tightening DMARC enforcement. A rushed DNS change can silently reject legitimate mail.
4. Change critical accounts gradually
Move the domain registrar, password manager, financial services and government accounts carefully. Keep the old inbox active until password resets, billing notices and forgotten subscriptions stop arriving there.
5. Export a recovery copy
Privacy is not backup. Keep an appropriate offline copy of important messages, contacts and calendars. Test that the export can actually be opened.
Limitations to understand
- Search and integrations can be less flexible because the server cannot freely process encrypted content.
- Mail with a non-Proton recipient is not automatically end-to-end encrypted unless you use password protection or compatible encryption.
- Calendar collaboration is less mature than deeply integrated Workspace or Microsoft environments.
- Resetting credentials without the correct recovery method can make older encrypted data inaccessible.
- Proton must comply with valid Swiss legal orders for information it possesses; encryption limits content access but does not erase all metadata.
Final verdict
Proton Mail provides a meaningful architectural improvement over a conventional free inbox when reducing provider access is a priority. Calendar extends that model to one of the clearest records of daily life. The combination is practical enough for personal use and many independent professionals, especially with a portable custom domain.
Do not migrate because “encrypted” sounds reassuring. Migrate because you understand which content is protected, accept the recovery responsibility and have tested the features your work requires.
